How Much Does History Cost?
Traveling to historic sites is a major part of our family's vacations, and we have often bought memberships to various museums so that we can visit mulltiple times. While museums, battlefields, and historic homes are an excellent soure of fun and information for history lovers, the cost can be somewhat of a deterrent.
In order to help you plan your next family vacation, I've compiled a list of some of our nation's top historical sites and included price information. The list is by no means complete; I might have to make this into a series of several posts in order to include all of your favorite historic locations!
Everything is bigger in Texas, but ticket prices to the Alamo sure aren't! General admission is free. However, if you choose to take a guided tour, your cost will be $15 per person.
Traveling up to Mt. Vernon, you'll find that online ticket prices are $18 for adults, and $9 for youth aged 6-11. If you buy your tickets at the center, you pay $2 extra. While in Virginia, you can also visit Colonial Williamsburg. Single day tickets are priced at $40.99 for adults, and half this amount covers youth fees. This may seem pricey, so you might want to wait to plan your visit until September 9-24. These dates offer special prices for homeschool families; multi day adult tickets cost only $19, and kids get in for $13.50 The tickets provide full access to all of the buildings, including the governor's mansion.
If free tickets are your only option, consider taking your family to Independence Hall in Philadelphia ! A tour guide will take you through; you are not at liberty to roam the building as your wish. (See what I did there? :)
Also free are all of the Smithsonian museums in Washington D.C. These places not only provide hours of entertainment for the history lover, but scientists will enjoy them as well.
Traveling down south lands us at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Alabama. History and science are combined perfectly here. A $24 fee for adults and $16 for children allows you to tour the space center and ride in some of the rocket simulators.
Have any of you been to The National WWII Museum in New Orleans? Here, you'll learn that freedom isn't free. In fact, $26 is charged for adults. However, all students are given a special price of $16.50. Depending on your family or group size, your total cost will vary greatly based on how many students you have.
Dollywood isn't the only attraction in TN! The Pigeon Forge Titanic Museum has received rave reviews online. Tickets cost upwards of $26, but it looks like Groupon has some cheaper deals this summer.
I hope this information has helped you compare the costs of traveling to your favorite historical spots. In the future, we'll alert you to ticket deals and programs that might aid you in your next family adventure!
